Archives Preservation Project

Archives Preservation ProjectThe Catawba College Library was given a grant by the National Historical Publications and Record Commission for an archival preservation project. The Catawba College Library is the repository for archival records for both Catawba College and the Evangelical and Reformed Church Historical Society (Southern Chapter). For details on each of these collections, please consult the Archives page.

Objectives

The project goal was to conduct emergency preservation in the archival collections to arrest deterioration of some materials and to secure the services of a consultant to assist with preparation of long-term preservation strategies.

Accomplishments

Grant no. 2004-071 was successfully completed. A consultant visited the library for two days during the summer of 2004 and spoke with project personnel regarding preservation strategies and archival management. Guidelines for preservation of archival materials were prepared. Supplies that would assist in retarding deterioration were purchased, as was equipment that would reduce the handling of fragile documents. An ongoing project was started to scan fragile documents in the archives as a first step towards digitization and electronic distribution of selected materials in the collection.
