The Circulation Department is responsible for lending materials from the library's collection. In addition to charging and discharging library materials, circulation personnel provide basic reference service and directions, process and maintain faculty reserves and permanent reserves, check out audio-visual equipment for classroom use, and maintain the stack areas.

Students may request that a hold be placed on an item that is currently checked out by another person. That item will not be able to be renewed, and when it is returned, the item will be held and the student will be notified.
If an item that has been checked out is needed for Reserves, a recall may be issued, and the item must be returned to the library immediately. Students may request that recalls be placed on items that have been checked out to a faculty or staff for more than 30 days.

With the exception of equipment, there is a $10 per item maximum on all overdue fines.
Equipment that is returned late will be subject to a late charge of $1 per hour, up to a maximum of $10 per day for each piece of equipment.
Fines for Reserve Materials accrue at the beginning of each hour ($.50 for 1-60 minutes late, $1.00 for 61-120 minutes late, etc.).
While overdue notices are sent as a courtesy, it is the responsibility of the Student to be aware of the due date of any item, and overdue fines will be charged whether or not an overdue notice has been received.

Computers for student use are located on the main level of the library. These workstations provide network access, Internet access, Microsoft Office Suite, and access to library databases. There is a laser printer available for printing.Printing is automatically charged to the student's laser printing allowance (250 sheets per semester). All users must agree to and abide by the Catawba College Library Computer Use Policy.
Students may borrow audiovisual equipment for Catawba Classroom use only or student organization activities. All loans to students must be supported by a written request from the faculty or staff member in charge of the activity.
Reservations for the equipment must be made at the Circulation Desk at least 24 hours in advance.
Equipment that is returned late will be subject to a late charge of $1 per hour, up to a maximum of $10 per day for each piece of equipment.

Faculty loans are always subject to recall after the normal 30-day checkout period if students or another faculty member needs the materials. Materials may be recalled immediately if needed for the reserve area.
By the same token, a borrower may ask that a hold be placed on a needed item presently checked out to someone else. This reserves the book and prevents it from being renewed by the person who borrowed the item originally.
All materials borrowed for use inside or outside of the Library are to be returned to the book return slot at the Circulation Desk. When the Library is closed, materials may be returned to the Book drop chute located on the wall near the entrance to the Library.
Faculty do not accrue fines for overdue materials, however they are charged for lost materials. All books and documents on loan to continuing faculty are due at the end of each academic year. For faculty not continuing or on temporary contracts, all materials are due no later than fifteen days after the end of the term of employment. If any materials are not returned by the above times, they will be presumed lost and will be billed from the Business Office.

If the item is found and returned undamaged to the Library within six months, the replacement cost only will be refunded.
Interlibrary loan service is available for materials that are not in the library's collection.
Outside of the library's video collection, the State Library of North Carolina maintains a film and video collection in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Resources.
Requests for these videos should be made through Catawba College's Interlibrary Loan Department well in advance of the scheduled show date.
Faculty should make requests for the school year as early as possible during the summer months. It is extremely important to return films and video cassettes on time. Failure to return items on time could cause the library to lose its borrowing privileges.
The Interlibrary Loan Department has a print Catalog you may use to locate available titles or you may also search the State Library's video collection through its Online Catalog.
Catawba College is a member of the Charlotte Area Education Consortium. The CAEC cooperative program permits use of the library of any member institution by faculty of other member institutions for the purpose of supplementing the resources of his/her own library. This program is for borrowing privileges only; reference or other services are not included. For more information, see our CAEC page.

A small seminar room may be reserved at the Circulation Desk for group study projects involving at least three persons.
Faculty may borrow audiovisual equipment for Catawba Classroom use only or student organization activities.
Reservations for the equipment must be made at the Circulation Desk at least 24 hours in advance.
Listening equipment for phonodiscs, audiocassettes and CD's is available. A small viewing room for videocassettes and DVD's is located on the mezzanine. Ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.
Fax services are available to all Catawba affiliated persons. There is a $1.00 charge for up to 10 pages.
This policy applies to all borrowers who are neither faculty, staff, nor students at Catawba College. These include, but are not limited to, Rowan County residents, faculty members at any of the Charlotte Area Educational Consortium (CAEC) institutions, and faculty, staff, or students from Livingstone College, Hood Theological Seminary, Rowan/Cabarrus Community College, Pfeiffer College, and other higher education institutions.
This policy is consistent with the policy for cooperative borrowing promulgated by the CAEC Library Directors' Committee, composed of the library directors of the participating institutions. A copy of the current CAEC agreement is on file. CAEC Borrowers are issued a Joint Borrower's Card by their respective institutions.
Other Community Borrowers are issued a Borrower's Card by the Catawba College Library.
Anyone 16 years old or over with a valid ID (NC driver's license preferred) has checkout privileges at the Catawba College Library.
There currently is no charge for a Community Borrower card.

IMPORTANT: Loans are subject to recall at any time if a Catawba student or faculty needs the book or if it is needed for the Reserve Section. The recalled item must be returned within 2 days of notification. On the 3rd day, fines begin accruing at the rate of $1.00 per day.
Community residents may borrow up to 6 books. A person can have only 6 books out at any given time. The person who signs the registration card is responsible for all fees and/or fines for overdue, lost, and damaged books.
All books are to be returned to the Catawba College Library. Materials may be returned to the Circulation Desk during the hours that the library is open. The drop box at the entrance to the library (at the top of the steps to the left) may be used when the library is closed.
The Catawba College Library is a selective depository library both for United States and North Carolina documents. All residents have access to these collections. Documents must be used in the library, but photocopying facilities are available for both paper and microform documents.

If a fine or fee is owed, it must be paid before any other books can be borrowed. The library will suspend borrowing privileges for persons who have outstanding charges for fines and/or fees. In addition to this procedure, the library, as a member of the Salisbury-Rowan Merchants Association, turns over delinquent accounts to the Collection Services Association. All accounts referred to the Collection Services Division will be recorded on the debtor's permanent credit file.
Community Borrowers are not eligible to use CLB Library's Interlibrary loan services. Please consider joining the Friends of the Library, or check with your local public library. Most public libraries provide this service to cardholders free of charge.
Community Borrowers may use the public workstations for two hours per day. These workstations provide Internet access, Microsoft Office Suite access, and access to NC Live databases. Community Borrowers may not have access to all the databases due to cost considerations.

The purpose of the The Friends of Catawba College Library is to stimulate interest in the collections and facilities of the Catawba College Library. Benefits of a Friend's Membership includes:

Interlibrary loan services should be requested via the written forms available at the Circulation Desk.
There is no charge for items that the library can secure free of charge. If there are charges to secure items the library will charge the requestor what it costs to get the items.
